With February upon us and the fact that it is considered the month of LOVE, I thought I would look into Valentine’s Day and its meaning. Valentine’s day has an interesting origin, its history is dark.
Saint Valentine served in third-century Rome as a temple priest under Emperor Claudius. The Emperor decided that single men made better soldiers. Therefore, Claudius banned soldiers from being married. One account is that Valentine still continued to perform the weddings of young soldiers who were in love in secret. But once Claudius found out about the weddings, he had Valentine imprisoned. While imprisoned, Valentine reportedly fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Valentine sent her a card and signed it, "Love, your Valentine." Saint Valentine was eventually beheaded. He died for LOVE.
But then I didn’t want to stop there, there is so much to February and this thing called LOVE so I went to a few sources for information on LOVE.
I personally don’t think there should be a day, month or even just one hour devoted to LOVE, love is a lifetime, love is why we exist. We were created to LOVE one another and ourselves (yes ourselves) and most importantly created to LOVE God. “We LOVE because He LOVED us first.” 1 John 4:19
Now what does the dictionary say about LOVE?
LOVE means “an intense feeling of deep affection, fondness, tenderness, warmth, attachment, endearment, devotion, adoration, doting, worship, passion, ardor, desire, lust, yearning, compassion, friendship, kindness, unselfishness”.
Ok, that sounds about right love is vast, varied and full of more than just emotion. Our hearts and minds are very involved in LOVE. LOVE doesn’t have to be romantic it can be the love of a friend, the love of a good book, the love of your favorite sweater and the love of your pet.
This is what the bible says about LOVE. No matter your belief system when you read the scripture below it has to give you hope. Just think if this is how we all practiced LOVE the world would not be in the state its in.
“LOVE is large and incredibly patient. LOVE is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous when blessing comes to someone else. LOVE does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. LOVE does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. LOVE is not easily irritated or quick to take offense. LOVE joyfully celebrates honesty and finds no delight in what is wrong. LOVE is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others. LOVE never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up. LOVE never stops loving” 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 TPT
When I read these beautiful words in TPT (The Passion Translation) I have hope, hope for the future, hope for my family, hope for my friends and friendships, hope for this city, for Alberta, for Canada and for the world. Hope for humanity. Honestly, if we just tried to follow these verses and even what the dictionary says, things would be so much better especially if we turned that LOVE back onto ourselves. When we do that, we can shine that LOVE onto others without holding back. We won’t feel overwhelmed, depleted or jealous because we first love God, ourselves and others. Simple if we realize we are all individuals made for something more, we are not the same and shouldn’t be that’s what makes us wonderful and what makes this world so special. We need to start embracing ourselves and each other, our differences, our weaknesses, our successes, our victories and our failures. We need to love each other through this life with honesty, grace, hope and encouragement.
So, this month, I pray you see the wonderfulness of you and why you are so special and why you were created. If you are unsure of any of these things might I suggest a few books to read (I’m am a fan of both, its not an ad) Made for More by Lara Casey and (UN)qualified by Steven Furtick. Both are amazing for different reasons and I believe these books might help give you perspective on the imperfectly beautiful person you are. Help you embrace this life with hope and purpose.
